Custom software and mobile app development
from Canberra
An Indigenous-led team in Watson, ACT, and an Apple Technical Partner. We build custom software, iOS and Android apps, cloud, security, and integration, and manage Apple device fleets for organisations across Australia.
About Us
Yuma IT is an Australian Indigenous-led IT company based in Canberra, ACT. We do custom software development and mobile app development for government, research institutions, and organisations around the country, plus cloud, security, and systems integration.
Our founders have worked on projects at Microsoft, the Australian Federal Government, CSIRO, the private sector, and non-governmental organisations. That experience spans components inside Microsoft Azure, national-scale monitoring programs, and mobile apps used by researchers and land managers in remote parts of Australia.
We are a Supply Nation Certified Supplier , verified as a majority Indigenous-owned and operated Australian business.
As an Apple Technical Partner, Yuma IT has trained technical staff that specialise in consulting and technology services for business customers on the Apple platform. As part of the Apple Partner Network, we provide Apple device management and MDM consultancy across Apple Business Manager, Jamf, Microsoft Intune, SimpleMDM, and JumpCloud.
Justin Middler
Managing Director
Justin is a Muruwari man and the Managing Director of Yuma IT. He lives and works in Canberra, on Ngunnawal Country. He is a descendant of William "Deucem" Smith, the Bourke-born shearer who in 2005 became the first Aboriginal person inducted into the Australian Shearer's Hall of Fame.
Muruwari Country sits on the New South Wales and Queensland border around Barringun, Enngonia on the Warrego River, and Weilmoringle on the Culgoa River, with family also around Bourke and Brewarrina. Deucem was born in Bourke in 1896. He sheared across New South Wales and southern Queensland, and later worked the sheds around Top Naas, Lanyon, Tuggeranong and Uriarra. A large part of that family still lives in and around Canberra, which is why Yuma IT is based here.
Justin has more than twelve years as a software engineer and cyber security engineer on Australian Federal Government work in Canberra. That includes standing up Microsoft Sentinel as a security operations centre, uplifting SOAR, hybrid Azure networking, and ACSC ISM and Essential Eight compliance work. He also worked as a Software Engineer on Core Azure Networking at Microsoft, shipping production code on the Azure networking control and data plane.
As Enterprise Security Architect he sat on Employment and Education programs valued between $100 million and $300 million. Earlier work included IRAP assessment support against the ISM, and production container platforms on Azure Kubernetes Service, Red Hat OpenShift, and VMware Tanzu. Yuma IT is the company he runs from that background: Indigenous-led engineering that government, research groups, and smaller organisations can actually hire.
Why We Exist
Large organisations usually have access to strong engineering. Smaller Indigenous businesses and community organisations often don't. Yuma IT exists to narrow that gap, with work that is affordable, practical, and built to last.
What We Bring
- Enterprise experience: Our team has built and shipped systems at Microsoft, delivered national programs for the Australian Government, and worked across CSIRO research projects.
- Indigenous perspective: As an Indigenous-led company, we understand the unique challenges facing Indigenous organisations, including data sovereignty, remote connectivity, and culturally appropriate technology design.
- Real-world delivery: from $10 million national monitoring programs and ecommerce platforms that process millions of dollars a month in transactions for local businesses to open-source wildlife rehabilitation software.
Based in Canberra
We're based at 49 Phillip Ave, Watson ACT 2602, in the heart of Canberra. Our location positions us close to the Australian Government, key research institutions, and the growing Canberra technology community.
